Week 4

My final crafting project was crochet. In the beginning of the week, I met with my good friend Katie Barnicle to get her help with crochet. She is quite the crochet master, so it was really nice to get started with crochet with her help. I watched a few videos and did some research before meeting with her and I was able to leave knowing how to do the basic crochet stitch and she also gave me suggestions for patterns to follow. The pattern I was originally setting out to complete was going to be much more complicated and harder to follow, so it was very helpful getting her advice. I realized that it was so much easier to have someone tangibly there to walk me through the steps as opposed to watching videos and looking at websites. If I could redo my project, I would have made it more of a priority to meet with people. Throughout my project, I reached out to multiple friends online to get help, but the only person I met in person with was Katie for crochet.  After meeting with Katie,...

Week 3

For Week 3 of my senior project, I was embroidering. This was the craft that I knew least about and was also probably least excited to do. Below is a picture of me at Michaels on Monday.  I started off the week researching embroidery and watching videos to learn about the different stitches and what I would need. A side skill I've had to learn is couponing. I've been avidly couponing to try and get the best deals for the supplies. There were quite a few supplies I had to get for embroidery, which was different than the last two since I usually had some tools lying around my house.  (It was very very bright) Below, is a picture of a llama kit that I purchased from Michaels. When talking to an employee, they recommended that I try using a kit that had a very small hoop and the pattern was already on the fabric. Since I had never done embroidery, I thought that this would be a good way to get started. The picture is after I completed the outline of the llama and started filling i...

Week 2

For my second week of my senior project, I was making jewelry. This was the only craft that was somewhat familiar to me as I had taken a jewelry making class last year and made jewelry during quarantine. When school started up again, I didn't find myself having as much time to try new skills with jewelry making and being able to make it at all, so I was excited to have the week to do it again. This week, I was doing a flat beed peyote stitch bracelet and clay rings. I have gotten into the routine of taking a weekly trip to Michaels on the first day of the week. This week it was Tuesday as I was traveling on Monday. When I went to Michaels, the woman working there recognized me since I had gone in last week and we started talking about the crafts I was doing. She actually gave me advice on purchasing a different type of clay to do the rings as she had tried the project a few months ago. It was really nice to talk to someone who knew about the projects I was doing, outside of the gro...

Week 1 !

Image
Welcome to Week 1 of my senior project. For my project, I am doing various crafting projects. I am knitting, crocheting, making jewelry, and embroidering. I chose to do this project because I wanted to do a project where I could work with my hands and be away from screens. During quarantine, I started making a lot of jewelry and found it to be a very calming and relaxing activity. I've also always found crafts to be very peaceful to do, so I wanted to expand on my crafting skills by learning a few new ones during my senior project. I have never done any knitting, crochet, or embroidery, and I thought it would be fun to learn. Another part of criteria for my project was being able to work on something anywhere, particularly being outside. My inspiration was seeing my friends and family experiment with knitting and crochet, and also having a positive experience with jewelry making. I saw a lot of trends on social media that I thought I could expand on to create small goals each week....
